2010 Night Operation

Given the weather the weekend before we were dead lucky during the Night Operation in Sutton Park on the 9th & 10th October 2010 Team numbers were down and with less Activity Points on top of that it was decided to shorten the event. Every one of the 39 teams needed to find their way to Jamboree Stone from Clifton Road Youth Centre to start.

All through the night teams of young people were busily engaged in the criss-crossing this lovely outdoor resource in the time honoured way. The “Fed” team enjoy manning a point where young people can get a hot drink, some advice and support as well as being around should any team get stuck or find themselves in trouble, their words not mine.

None of us know what next year will bring and we are aiming to see the Night Operation is in your “Fed” programme yet again. I have asked our partners, BAYC and the City’s Youth Service to maybe ring the changes and look at the concept. Maybe you think it should stay the same, but if you have any ideas to give it a new slant please contact the fed on 01214533531.

NIGHT OPERATION 2009

Last years Night Operation took place on Saturday 25th April, again at Sutton Park. The Night Operation is an event that challenges teams of young people to navigate through the park at night using torchlight to find a variety of Actviity points where they complete simple challenges before moving on.

Birmingham Fed worked tirelessly through the night to provide food and hot drinks for the 60 teams of hungry and thirsty young people. The bacon sandwiches in particular went down a storm with the youngsters. A massive thanks to the following volunteers who provided a sterling service throughout the night into the wee hours - Barry Green, Andy, Leah and Robbie Douglas, Steven, Jimmy Grene, John Harbidge and Mike Smith. We look forward already to again playing a vital part in Night Op 2010 this year!

NIGHT OPERATION 2007

Saturday 28th April at Sutton Park

THe 2007 Night Operation was a huge success with 336 young people aged 13 to 18 taking part, comprising 84 teams of 4. The Night Operation was a joint venture between Birmingham Fed, Birmingham City Council Youth Services and BAYC. This year it was a true adventure experience. Throughout the night, starting at midnight, teams navigated the 1000 hectares of Sutton Park looking for 'Incident Points'. They completed a variety of tasks, scoring pointsalong the way to compete for a trophy.

One of the key roles of Birmingham Fed was to provide the food and drinks for young people throughout the night. This took the form of a food marquee. A huge thanks goes to those who contributed their time and expertise (and sacrificed sleep!) throughout the night to keep the young people fed and watered. Particular thanks to:

Martin Florey - in charge of the Bacon barbecue

Barry - Vegetarian barbecue (Barry's blackened veggie burgers are now the stuff of legend!)

Steven Florey - bread man

John Harbidge - Tea/Coffee/Hot Chocolate

Matthew Todd - Hot Drinks, front of house

An extra special thanks to Mike Smith, who used his considerable navigational skills to direct many a lost group of young people, most of which never did get to their desired location after all!

This years Night operation will take place on Saturday 10th May 2008, again to be held at Sutton Park
